The second sequel and the last movie of this month is Star Trek Beyond. I was a massive fan of the first two Star Trek films and there’s a calming nostalgia around the Star Trek franchise for me that just makes me happy. Though I’m far from a trekkie (that title belongs to my older brother) I was pretty excited for the next instalment albeit slightly disappointed that JJ Abrams has now completely departed for Team Disney, but I had faith in Simon Pegg’s writing and the vision of the team.
The film, in the words of my friend Joe, is ‘good, not great’ which sums it up perfectly for me. The film goes straight in to the drama, meaning there’s never really any time for the tension to build and so the conflict never really feels that threatening. Idris Elba is wasted behind prosthetics and never quite delivers a truly menacing performance. Newcomer Sofia Boutella stands out however. commanding and demanding as alien warrior Jaylah, she’s a welcome breath of fresh air to the team and I look forward to seeing her in more in the future.
The film kept me hooked and made me happy but compared to more recent efforts it falls flat, similar to NYSM2, it’s just somewhat forgettable. What I will say in it’s favour is that more than any other ST film, it reminded me of an episode of the television series, showing Pegg’s clear love and passion for the series.
Entertaining but not big enough.
