Central Intelligence is so not my kind of film. The Rock, nice guy but not a real actor. Kevin Hart, just a meh filler guy in my opinion. So I was quite shocked when I saw the trailer and found myself laughing along and dare I say, looking forward to the film?
When it finally came out, I was not disappointed. Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson was adorably hilarious, vulnerable and insane, always keeping the audience on edge and guessing. Kevin Hart also finally proved to me why he’s been so successful. By allowing Johnson to take the lead in the comedy stakes, his character was able to develop without being over the top or making stupid throw away jokes and I felt myself rooting for him.
Central Intelligence managed to do what few comedy films achieve, an intriguing and exciting plot that works independently to the comedy. The twists and turns kept me guessing and I never at any point felt bored, Johnson’s character was believable as both a trusting naive CIA agent and a double crossing evil mastermind. The third act kept the tempo running perfectly whilst still getting a completely satisfying ending for all characters involved.
A great comedy, with silly characters and a fun plot. Definitely worth a go.
4 stars.
